Chandon's history goes back several years, when Moet &Chandon began producing premium sparkling wines outside of France. In the late 1950s, the founder of Chandon, Robert-Jean de Vogue, visited overseas wine producers for the first time to discuss cooperation with them and successfully apply their expertise and experience in the field of champagne to the production of sparkling wine overseas. In the mid-1980s, Chandon's team of experts discovered an excellent new site in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia - an ancient dairy farm. The cool climate and fertile soil naturally make it an ideal place to produce Methode Traditionnelle sparkling wine at Domaine Chandon Australia.
Keep the market leader in Australia amid the sparkling wine consumption boom
In Australia, sparkling wine currently accounts for 6.9% of the total wine and cider market, a figure that is expected to grow further over the next five years. The positive growth has a lot to do with local consumers' growing preference for high-end refined drinks such as French Champagne. Since 2014, more and more wine lovers have started to change their consumption habits from low-end wines to high-end wines. High-end wines have also been increasing at an average annual rate of 5%. Sales of high-end wines have reached $6.9 billion in 2018-19.
Forecasts indicate that many new companies will enter this market segment, and to remain competitive in the market, large players in the industry will need to further automate their production processes.[IBISWorld Industry Report "Wine Production in Australia", 2019("The state of Australian Wine Production in 2019 ")]Domaine Chandon's collaboration with Sidel is driven by this idea, with a view to creating more automated, safer and more efficient solutions.
Sidel has a strong track record of expertise in the integration of wine and spirits production facilities
Sidel and DCA began working on this project a few years ago. Initially, Sidel proposed a number of equipment layout concepts based on available plant space, packaging design specifications, and Domaine Chandon's technical requirements for the equipment. The in-box technique was not widely adopted in the industry at the time, but the Australian sparkling wine producer quickly recognised the advantages of using wrapped boxes over the more common RSC. "DCA is a true industry leader, "said Julien Claudin, manager of Sidel Australia." It was a great challenge to incorporate the carton and the partition inserter module in the same facility, and we were very pleased to be a part of it." For new equipment, DCA wants to work with exclusive suppliers who can provide end-to-end solutions that enable a high degree of automation at all stages of the production process.
The Cermex WB46 inner packing machine is the ideal packing solution for the production of high end products. The equipment is suitable for different packaging bottles, no matter what the design or label type, can be handled extremely smoothly. The contact position between the equipment components and the product is specially designed to ensure the product is intact and avoid scratches. It can be handled efficiently in both the limited edition bottles with the liner process and the regular paper Domaine Chandon bottles. Carefully designed grab head that can grab up to six bottles at a time and transfer them to the automatic baffle inserter module built into the packing machine. Julien added: "We specifically took the time to validate the technical concept proposal to ensure that the bottle can be treated in detail to minimize damage to the bottle's body, such as the cap, label and sleeve." Combination of good product output once inside the wraparound board, the board is completely wrapped hold the bottle body, forming a completely square solid box, thus for subsequent proper palletizing and downstream logistics operations guarantee.
Domaine Chandon Production Director ChrisFraser said, "Our cartons have a perfectly square structure that allows them to stack securely on pallets; This means that the impact of product transport on product quality can be minimized." DCA's Richard adds: "Previously, we had a stuffing machine in the factory, but it required a lot of manual handling: we had to insert the cardboard partitions by hand, we had to stack them manually, and then we could use a truck to transfer them to a film baler for packaging."
With the introduction of Cermex WB46, cartons can be marked and delivered to the sidel PalAccess palletizing machine for automatic palletizing. The PalAccess is also a fully automated device that can change shapes without tools, without changing parts, and without manual adjustment. In future production, the operator can design, simulate and load the new pallet palleticing mode using the PalDesigner software built into HMI, without additional programming operations and without the need for specialized supplier intervention services. In addition, through the interface of the new operation panel, you can also access the machine's technical documentation, click on the course/OPL program sheet, and dedicated videos to help troubleshoot problems.
Richard concluded: "Throughout the process, the Sid Orchestra was very active in helping us analyze a lot of the problems in the project, especially how to automatically insert the partition into the cardboard box."
Sidel expands local markets in Australia and New Zealand
"During the project, one of our initial concerns was that we were working with a supplier based in Europe who might not be as strong as the local suppliers," notes Richard. However, we are very pleased to see that Sidel is able to combine the comprehensive business strength of the global 1 with the local advantage of close to the customer 18; They are committed to focusing their business in our region, which is critical." Julien added: "Sidel is currently expanding in Australia and New Zealand. "For us, the partnership 21 with Chandon will be a great way to further expand our presence in the Australian market and to further strengthen our long heritage in the wine and spirits segment."
The new back-end system has been running successfully for more than a year. Domaine29 Chandon is seeing the benefits of the equipment: the sparkling wine producer has achieved its production targets, met the growing business demand, and improved production efficiency.
